LCCA Alliance Announces Recipient of Mike Whitmore Award
The Mike Whitmore Award for Outstanding Public Service is designed to afford contemporaries in Lorain County public service an opportunity to honor one of their own for achievement, contribution, vision and leadership. Many people have worked for the betterment of Lorain County and its citizens. Mike Whitmore was one of them. Although not elected to a political office, he believed Lorain County could benefit from its communities and agencies working together. It is only appropriate the award bear his name and be given at Lorain County’s largest gathering of community leaders – the Lorain County Community Summit.
Lorain County Commissioner Matt Lundy, who is the Chair of the LCCA, presented Dr. Ballinger the 13th Annual Mike Whitmore Award.
Lundy praised Dr. Ballinger for her more than 25 years in community college leadership roles that have advanced student success, workforce and economic development, strategic planning, and institutional advancement. Under her leadership and deep commitment to student success, Lorain County Community College was recognized by the American Association for Community Colleges (AACC) as the 2018 Recipient of the AACC Award of Excellence in Student Success. Additionally, under Dr. Ballinger’s leadership, hallmarks of the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem were developed and thriving today, such as: GLIDE, a regional technology incubator and the Innovation Fund, the region’s earliest pre-seed fund for start-up technology companies.
Over 50 people were in attendance with the focus of the Summit being “Governmental Updates” from federal, state and local levels. Federal and state reports were given by Representative Dick Stein District 57 as well as representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur District 9, and Ohio Secretary of State John Husted. Reporting on the County level included Lorain County Commissioner Matt Lundy, Auditor Craig Snodgrass, Recorder Judy Nedwick and Economic Development Coordinator Jerry Good.
The meeting began with networking and a continental breakfast sponsored by Lorain County Engineer Ken Carney. The LCCA 2019 slate of Executive Committee members was approved and consists of Chair, Lorain County Commissioner Matt Lundy; Vice Chair, Mayor of North Ridgeville David Gillock; Secretary, Fiscal Officer of Sheffield Township Patricia Echko; Treasurer, Trustee of Columbia Township Dick Heidecker and Administrative Coordinator, Virginia Haynes.
The next Alliance meeting is Transportation Day, Friday, April 5, 2018. Transportation Day gives Agencies the opportunity to update Lorain County entities on impending Transportation Projects and gives attendees the forum in which to get their questions answered.
The Lorain County Community Alliance is a council of Governments, formed under the Ohio Revised Code and made up of political jurisdictions and organizations working together for the benefit of the citizens of Lorain County and the entire region. The Alliance seeks to explore more effective levels of public service, develop mechanisms to save money for the communities involved and benefit the member communities and the region in ways that could not be achieved separately.
